The EU institutions that monitor compliance with human rights and freedom of speech must take a more active part in the fate of the arrested in Ukraine, the head of RIA news Ukraine Kirill Vyshinsky, said the speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko.

«We are entitled to expect that officials in the European structures will not selectively and shirk responsibilities for the protection of human rights and freedom of speech. Moreover, it is obvious that the case (Wyszynski) sewn with white thread,» she told reporters.

Expressing hope that in this matter the position of Russia and the European Union are the same, the speaker recalled that the OSCE representative on freedom of the media, have stated serious concern about the situation. «But these words, and need action, we need results,» — said Matvienko.

The Embassy of Russia has sent the Ukrainian foreign Ministry two notes with a demand to stop violence against the media.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Wyszynski was arrested «for his direct professional activities, for exercising his journalistic functions,» and stressed that the arrest of Vyshinsky — «absolutely unprecedented and totally unacceptable policy of the current Ukrainian rulers, it should be appropriately reflected in the reaction of the journalistic community and international human rights organizations.» He also expressed the hope that it will be possible to secure the release of Wyszynski, including by means of pressure on Ukraine in international organizations.

The OSCE representative on freedom of the media, Harlem Desir had previously expressed serious concern about the actions of Kiev in relation to RIA Novosti Ukraine. After the next prolongation of term of detention of Vyshinsky custody Dezir expressed disappointment with Ukraine’s position and called for the release of the journalist. The Secretary General of the OSCE Thomas Greminger, commenting on the situation with Wyszynski, stressed that all the countries of the organization committed to promote an environment in which journalists can fulfill their obligations in another member state, and therefore must abide by international standards and not to interfere in the work of the media.
