The ceremony of farewell to victims of an armed attack on a bus and a minibus with the local Christians-the Copts who went to the monastery of St. Samuel, took place in El-Minya in southern Egypt on Saturday morning.

In the attack, which occurred on Friday, according to official data, seven people died, 12 were injured. Responsibility for attack was assumed by the terrorist group «Islamic state.»*

Ceremony of farewell to the dead took place in the Church of Tadros in the presence of their relatives, of the bishops of the Coptic Church, the local leaders of the security authorities and deputies.

In a special video message from the Patriarch of the Coptic Orthodox Church Tawadros II expressed condolences to the bereaved families and said that the attack on Christians will not undermine national unity in Egypt.

«This is a blow not only to the Christians of Egypt, but for the whole Egyptian society. Our unity is the most valuable thing we have,» — said the head of the Coptic Church.

The Coptic Orthodox Church is one of the oldest Christian churches in the world. Currently, the Copts are the most numerous Christian denomination in the middle East, the majority of Copts live in Egypt. According to various sources, the number of Copts in Egypt is about ten million people.

This is not the first attack on Christians in the area of the monastery of St. Samuel in the province of Minya. In may 2017 as a result of similar attacks on the bus with Christians from Beni-Safa killed 28 people.
