The Supreme appeal court of Bahrain on Sunday sentenced to life imprisonment of three leaders of the Shiite opposition in Bahrain, including the Secretary General of the party, «al-Wifaq» Ali Salman, for espionage in favor of Qatar, reported Bahraini news Agency with reference to the representative of the court.

In June, the court of Bahrain, was acquitted of charges of espionage with Salman, which in 2015 is serving a sentence in prison for insulting interior Ministry and inciting others to disobey the authorities. However, the Prosecutor General returned the case for retrial.

Salman and other leaders of the Shiite opposition — the Sultan Hassan and Ali Aswad was sentenced to life imprisonment for «espionage in favor of Qatar with the aim of obtaining military secrets to hostile acts inside Bahrain and damage its national interests».

The Shiite community of Bahrain described the new sentence its leaders as politically motivated and called on supporters to hold protests against the government’s decision.
