Only the preservation of a unified system of moral values common to all traditional religions of Russia, can make a sustainable national unity in a multi-religious country, said the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill in the homily after the festive Liturgy in the assumption Cathedral of the Kremlin.

The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates November 4, the feast of the Kazan icon of the Mother of God, coinciding with the Day of national unity.

«What is important in the current environment to shape and support that would preserve national unity?.. It is our moral doctrine, system of moral values that are stored in Orthodoxy, but which are of religious people, not related to the Orthodox faith,» — said the Patriarch.

According to him, this part of faith «attitude, so necessary for the formation of the human person,» and can be the basis of national unity. «Simply put, we must have the same moral and spiritual values, then our people will be United, even belonging to different religions», — said the Primate.

How important it is, said the Patriarch, shows the country’s historical experience. If there is no genuine national unity, then «the rest of the state superstructure, the system becomes unsustainable.» «It is very important to have a Foundation in common values, common moral system that educated, shaped the people and would affect the policy of the state», — he stressed.

The first Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church expressed hope that the Russians in the current difficult times will be able to pass the historical test that befell both Church and state, and the people, «worthy of keeping the faith.»

The celebration of the Kazan icon is installed in commemoration of the deliverance of Moscow and Russia from poles in 1612. With the victory of the people’s militia led by Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky, ending the time of Troubles, is the Day of national unity. This national holiday is celebrated annually on November 4 since 2005.

The Kazan icon of the virgin was the main Shrine of the militia of Minin and Pozharsky during the war with the Polish and Swedish interventionists in the years 1611-1613. One of the honor lists of the icon appeared in Kazan in 1579, was in military camp. In memory of the liberation of Moscow was established a special celebration in honor of the Kazan icon. Initially it was done only in Moscow, but in 1649 became a nationwide celebration.
