The Parliament of Ukraine at a meeting on Tuesday created a temporary investigative Commission to investigate the attack on the counselor of the mayor of Kherson Catherine Gandzyuk and other social activists, this decision was supported by 259 people’s deputies with the required minimum of 150 votes.
Gandzyuk, which 31 July in Kherson poured concentrated sulfuric acid on Sunday died in hospital. The police confirmed the fact of her death, law enforcement agencies conduct investigations at a hospital in Kiev.
«Given the systemic nature of the attacks, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is obliged to carry out its monitoring function and deal with the real causes, and to assist in the investigation of these cases and bring the perpetrators to justice through the creation of the temporary investigative Commission for investigation of information concerning attacks on Catherine Gandzyuk and other social activists», — stated in the explanatory note to the document.
According to the decree, the Commission of inquiry will consist of 18 people. The head of the Commission elected an independent MP Borislav Birch, his Deputy became the Deputy of the faction «Block of Petro Poroshenko» Sergey Alekseev. The duration of the temporary investigative Commission and to submit progress report to Parliament three months from the date of creation.
In summer, Ukrainian police reported that unknown persons doused Gandzyuk concentrated sulfuric acid. The victim with burns were hospitalized and all this time was in a serious condition in hospital. Militiamen investigated case about attempt at murder, but after her death on Sunday reclassified to custom-made murder. The head of national police of Ukraine Sergey Knyazev said that the law enforcers detained six suspects in the case. The court arrested four of them. Prosecutor General Yury Lutsenko said on Tuesday it will submit a resignation because of allegations of bad faith in the investigation.
