Russia and Spain will create a group on cybersecurity that will deal with the prevention and investigation of spreading false news, similar to those that appeared in the midst of the Catalan crisis. This was decided at a meeting in Madrid the foreign Ministers of Russia and Spain Sergey Lavrov and Josep Borrell.

«We expressed our concern about the spread of false news,» — said at a press conference the Spanish Minister. According to him, this was «one of the most important topics» of the negotiations. He also noted that with the idea of establishing such a group was made by the Russian Minister.

«I am delighted that the Minister has proposed to create a group on cyber security, to analyze the extent of the problem and to avoid it to be friction in our relations,» added Borrell. He also recalled that Spain never claimed that the proliferation of fake news are the Russian authorities and the Russian government. «It was some Russian mass media,» he said.

Borrell also thanked Russia for its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Spain in connection with events in Catalonia.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that Russia does not interfere in the Catalan crisis and is interested in preserving the territorial integrity of Spain. Putin called «nonsense» allegations that the cyber attacks could be Russia.

In the midst of the Catalan crisis in the autumn and winter of last year, the Spanish authorities stated that information aimed at supporting the independence of Catalonia, spread in social networks from the territories of Russia and Venezuela. However, they stressed that they do not have evidence of the involvement of the authorities in these countries.

Moscow called on Madrid to provide specific facts of Russian intervention in the situation in Catalonia. As stated by the official representative of Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova, «a special surprise call came from the mouth of the Minister of foreign Affairs (Spain), the words that Russia is allegedly interested in weakening Spain.»

Based on the results of the «referendum», the Catalan Parliament on 27 October last year declared independence. The next day, the government with the consent of the Senate introduced direct rule in the Autonomous community, ousted from power Generalitat and dissolved the Parliament. Against the former Catalan leaders and the leaders of the separatist community organizations, former leaders of the Catalan law enforcement agencies and former leaders of the Parliament initiated a criminal case on charges of organizing an uprising, mutiny and embezzlement of public funds.
