The EU supports the decision to enable the OPCW’s capacity to participate in the establishment of the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors and those involved in the use of chemical weapons, will continue to make efforts to combat impunity for its use, the statement said diplomatic service of the EU following the meeting with Federica Mogherini as the new head of the OPCW.

The head of European diplomacy, Mogherini met on Thursday with Director General of the Organization for the prohibition of chemical weapons (OPCW) Fernando arias. The meeting discussed the question of closer cooperation between the EU and the organization.

«Mogherini underlined the support from the EU’s recent decision on granting the OPCW capabilities to assist in identifying the perpetrators, organizers, sponsors, and those who are otherwise involved in the use of chemical weapons,» — said in a brief statement following the talks.

«The EU will continue to strongly condemn the use of chemical weapons by anyone, anywhere and under any circumstances and will continue its efforts to end the use of such weapons and impunity for its use», — stated in it.

The special session of the Conference of the States parties to the Convention on the prohibition of chemical weapons previously voted in support of the proposed UK draft decision extending the mandate of the OPCW. In particular, the OPCW shall have the authority to determine the perpetrators of the use of chemical weapons. In support of such a decision were made by the representatives of the 82 delegations, while vs — 24.

Russia’s permanent representative to the OPCW Alexander Shulgin has told RIA Novosti that attempts to create in the OPCW attribute mechanism actually jeopardize the whole system of international relations. Russia intends to give a «considered and balanced» response, taking into account national interests, he added.
