The level of social inequality in Russia in 2017, was the lowest in 12 years, according to a study of the Institute «development Center» HSE.
«In recent years, inflation and social inequality decreased. In 2017, the year was marked the lowest level of inflation since 1991. But in 2017, according to Rosstat, was characterized by the low level of social inequality, since 2006,» say the experts.
At the same time they show that in 2018 the situation with the level of inequality has not yet decided to end. So, for 9 months of the inequality slightly increased in relation to January-September, 2017 (the Gini coefficient increased from to 0,400 0,402).
«The increase in inequality was due to the fact that the income of 20% of the richest population grew faster than the income of the poorest 40% of the population (4,84 and 3.08 per cent respectively), which led to a decline in the share of income,» — they explain.
According to the forecast of the Institute «development Center» higher school of Economics, the consumer price index in 2018 will be about 4%, which is likely to lead to a small increase in social differentiation at the end of the year, compared with 2017 year.
«In 2019, consumer price inflation may accelerate to 5.1%. Given the lower growth of wages in the public sector in 2019 compared to 2018, this could mean that Russia has passed the lowest level of social differentiation in the past 12 years, and social inequality will grow again. However, the government promised accelerated growth increase in pensions pensioners can slow down this process,» predict the authors of the report.
