The detention of U.S. journalist and first Deputy Chairman of Commission OP of the Russian Federation on development of information community, media and mass communications Alexander Malkevich, the act of violation of freedom of speech and pressure on independent media, according to the official statement of the Public chamber of the Russian Federation.

The Russian Embassy in Washington had sent a request to the US state Department in connection with the information about the detention of Malkevich.

«We believe that the actions of the US authorities did not conform to democratic principles and norms, is an act of violation of freedom of speech and pressure on independent media. Call on the competent US authorities to provide official information about the reasons of detention», — is reported on the website of the chamber.

Social activists also urged the international journalistic community «to condemn the illegal actions of US authorities against Russian journalist.»
