The former ruling party of Armenia will participate in the parliamentary elections

The former ruling and now opposition Republican party of Armenia will participate in the parliamentary elections on 9 December, told reporters on Sunday a member of the party, former defense Minister Vigen Sargsyan.

«The decision to participate in early parliamentary elections,» he said after a meeting of the Council and the Executive body of the party.

He added that the party is now at the stage of transformation, the transition from the ruling to an opposition force and is ready to use his experience as an opposition party. «We have the institutional capacity to prepare for elections in the shortest possible time», — said Sargsyan.

The Republican party of Armenia became the first independent in the country officially registered party (1991). In 2007, the party and the government headed by Sargsyan. The Republican party has been the ruling party since 1999. After the election of Prime Minister Nikola Pashinian, she moved to the opposition. Sargsyan headed the party list in the parliamentary elections of 2017.

The President of Armenia Armen Sargsyan signed on 1 November, the decree on dissolving the Parliament and calling new legislative elections on 9 December. Earlier in the day, the Parliament of Armenia for the second time failed to elect the Prime Minister that, under the law, shall entail its dissolution.

Prime Pashinyan 16 Oct resigned. According to the Armenian Constitution, the Parliament may be dissolved if, after the resignation of the head of the Cabinet, the deputies of the two sessions will not be able to elect a new Prime Minister.

In the Parliament of the last convocation 50 seats belonged to the former ruling Republican party of Armenia, 31 — unit «Tsarukyan», which is headed by big businessman Gagik Tsarukyan. Nine mandates were owned block «EFC» (Exodus), led by Pashinyan, is still a family — party «Dashnaktsutiun».
