The Russian Embassy in Austria refused to comment on local media reports that an Austrian intelligence officer suspected of divulging state secrets, alleged in favor of Russia.

Earlier on Sunday, the newspaper Kronen Zeitung wrote that an employee of the Federal office for Constitution protection and fight against terrorism (counter-intelligence) is suspected of divulging state secrets in Russia’s favor. According to the publication, the Austrian Prosecutor’s office for combating economic crimes and corruption leading the case against counterintelligence for the past year.

«No comment,» said RIA Novosti press-Secretary of the Russian Embassy Bulat Khaydarov.

On Friday, Chancellor of Austria Sebastian Kurz said that the former Colonel of the armed forces of Austria is suspected of maintaining in the 1990s for the current year of intelligence activities in favor of Russia. Chargé d’affaires of Russia to Austria was summoned to the Austrian foreign Ministry. We also learned that because of the incident, the Austrian foreign Minister Karin Kneissl canceled his visit to Russia.

The Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov later said he was unpleasantly surprised by information about the situation with the ex-Colonel accused in Austria for espionage in favor of Russia. The Austrian Ambassador was summoned on Friday to the Russian foreign Ministry in connection with this situation.
