Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Cyril has appointed the priest at the Russian Embassy Church in Istanbul for the organization of pastoral care of believers and commit to regular worship, it is made in connection with the severance of relations with the Patriarchate of Constantinople due to its actions in Ukraine, said on Monday the Department for external Church relations (DECR) of the Moscow Patriarchate.

«The eleventh of November in the Church of SS Constantine and Helena, located on the territory of the summer residence of the Consulate General of Russia in Istanbul, with the blessing of his Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill, served the hierarchical divine Liturgy, which made appointed by the decree of his Holiness the acting Abbot of the temple priest George Sergeev», — stated in the message.

The service was attended by Consul General of Russia in Istanbul Andrey Podyachev, the members and compatriots living in Istanbul and its surroundings.

During the Liturgy was proclaimed a petition to preserve the unity of Orthodoxy, and prayer for peace in Ukraine. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the First world war was also made the commemoration of the warriors fallen in battles.

After the service, priest George Sergeev addressed the worshippers with a welcome speech and conveyed the blessing of Patriarch Kirill.

«The priest noted that the decision of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church of October 15, 2018 on the impossibility of Eucharistic communion with the Patriarchate of Constantinople because of the gross violations of the canons on his part, the Russian-speaking Orthodox Christians residing in Turkey, sent numerous appeals to the Moscow Patriarchate with a request for their pastoral care. The appointment of a rector and start regular divine services in the historic Russian Embassy Church in Istanbul became a manifestation of care of the Russian Orthodox Church of its children living in Turkish land,» — said in a press release.

After the service a meeting was held of a priest with the representatives of the Russian-speaking Diaspora in Turkey.

The temple of the Holy equal to the apostles Constantine and Helena was built in 1832 on the site of the summer residence of the Embassy of the Russian Empire. After the revolution it was closed, in the room of the temple was placed a boiler room. By 2009 on the territory of the summer residence has undergone a major repair and restoration work, including a renovated Church. 6 July 2009 Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople and Patriarch Kirill performed the rite of consecration of the small temple.

The authorities in Kiev and non-canonical Church structure in Ukraine hope till the end of the year to receive the Tomos of autocephaly from Constantinople, but Tomos can get only the Primate of the «United» Church, it needs to select on the «unification Council» of the Orthodox churches in Ukraine, which date is not appointed yet. This canonical UOC said that is not going to participate in this event. Earlier, the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Andrei Parubiy said that in late November, could take place «unification Council» of the Orthodox churches.

Because of the decision of Constantinople to begin providing non-canonical autocephaly churches in Ukraine, which the Russian Orthodox Church is called the schism, the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on 15 October announced the severance of communication with the Patriarchate of Constantinople on the canonical territory of the ROC, including Ukraine and Belarus. The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church has called canonically void, and saw politics in the abolition of Constantinople by the act of 1686 on the transfer of the Kyiv Metropolitanate to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate. Metropolitan Hilarion said that Constantinople lost its right to be called the coordinating centre of Orthodoxy.
