The Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church broke Eucharistic communion with the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

«Taking into account the destructive activity and a gross violation of canonical rules by the Patriarchate of Constantinople, the clergy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to suspend Eucharistic communion with the clergy of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, and laity — participate in the ordinances performed in the temples of the Constantinople Patriarchate,» reads the Synod’s decision.

In addition, the Council of bishops of the UOC, which took place after the meeting of the Synod, noted that the faithful repeatedly appealed to the Patriarch Bartholomew with a request to legalize schism under the pretext of creating autocephaly, but their requests remained unheeded.

On the road split

The Council of bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church expressed the opinion that the Patriarchate of Constantinople took the path of secession and his decision not to have «no canonical force.»

In particular, the decision on the removal of the anathema, and other ecclesiastical prohibitions of the leaders of the schism, the bishops called «a consequence of a distorted interpretation of the Orthodox canons».

«History of the Orthodox Church does not know of cases to overcome the division by simple legalization. Anticanonical in taking such decisions, recognizing Raskolnikov mere Sana’a, the Patriarchate of Constantinople, according to Church rules, he was on the path of schism», the statement reads.

The situation in UOC

The authorities in Kiev and non-canonical Church structure in Ukraine hope till the end of the year to receive the Tomos of autocephaly from Constantinople, but Tomos can get only the Primate of the «United» Church, it needs to select on the «unification Council» of the Orthodox churches in Ukraine, which date is not appointed yet. This canonical UOC said that is not going to participate in this event.

Because of the decision of Constantinople to begin providing non-canonical autocephaly churches in Ukraine, which the Russian Orthodox Church is called the schism, the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on 15 October announced the severance of communication with the Patriarchate of Constantinople on the canonical territory of the ROC, including Ukraine and Belarus.

The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church has called canonically void, and saw politics in the abolition of Constantinople by the act of 1686 on the transfer of the Kyiv Metropolitanate to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate. Metropolitan Hilarion said that Constantinople lost its right to be called the coordinating centre of Orthodoxy. In the Russian Orthodox Church hope that Constantinople will change the decision to give the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church, and before that he will be in schism.
