Cyclone «Gaja» (Gaja) struck the Indian state of Tamil Nadu in the South of the country, 11 people died and more than 76 thousand evacuated to safer areas, according to the newspaper India Today, citing local authorities.

Heavy rains, accompanied by strong wind, struck the coastal districts of the state on Thursday, on the night of Friday, the cyclone intensified. Most of all, as the newspaper notes, because of the disaster suffered city Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Tanjore. A cyclone in the cities of fallen trees, in some areas there are power outages. In seven districts of the state in educational institutions cancelled classes.

Evacuees housed in more than 300 care centers. On elimination of consequences of floods in affected areas of the state sent teams of the National forces of disaster response (NDRF) and lifeguards.
