Japan expects that in the case of the transfer of Habomai and Shikotan, to these Islands will spread the sovereignty of Tokyo, said the Secretary-General of the government of Acehide Suga. He commented on Vladimir Putin’s statement made the day before.

On Thursday the Russian President confirmed that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced the agreement of Japan to discuss the peace Treaty issue on the basis of Joint Soviet-Japanese Declaration of 1956. However, he noted that the document is missing important details. So, it is stipulated that the Soviet Union is ready to transfer the two Islands southern part, but «it doesn’t, on what grounds and under whose sovereignty they fall».

Suga repeated that, while under the negotiating process, he did not wish to comment further on its contents.

He added that the summit November 14, Abe and Putin shared «a General expectation of not shifting (the problem. — Approx. ed.) for the next generation, to put an end to your own hands.»

«It was agreed that on the basis of Joint Soviet-Japanese Declaration to accelerate negotiations on concluding a peace Treaty. To do this, before you meet Putin in June in Japan, at the summit of «twenty», Prime Minister Abe at the beginning of the year to visit Russia. The announcement was made. At the moment I can only say this,» — said Suga, the journalists tried to clarify the details.

In particular, it asked whether to stay on the Islands military bases and asked them to name the terms of possible conclusion of the framework agreement.

The fourteenth of November, the leaders of Russia and Japan met in Singapore. There they agreed to resume dialogue on a peace Treaty on the basis of Joint Soviet-Japanese Declaration of 1956. This is the only document recognized by both countries. It is said that after the conclusion of a peace Treaty will be transferred to Japan Habomai and Shikotan. Prior to this, Tokyo insisted on the return of the four Islands — Habomai, Shikotan, Etorofu and Kunashir.
