The former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych will not be able to speak with the last word in court in Kiev, due to hospitalization, said Sunday his lawyer Alexander Gorodinsky.

«He can’t play tomorrow (Monday) in court, he lies in a hospital bed,» said Gorodinsky. The lawyer said that Yanukovych received an athletic injury.

«Viktor Yanukovych is hospitalized, he has a sports injury. He can not move independently. Injury is actually very serious leg and spine,» said Gorodinsky.

Informed in scientific research Institute Sklifosovsky in Moscow reported that Yanukovych was hospitalized on Friday, November 16. He was discharged from the Institute on the same day.

The lawyer said that on Monday, the defense Yanukovych intends to petition for interrogation of the former head of Ukraine Ministry of energy of Ukraine Eduard Stavytskyi.

«At the meeting of November 19, we will consider the question of interrogation of Eduard Stavytskyi, because he gave important evidence,» said Gorodinsky.

The court in late June of 2017 began its consideration of the merits of treason against Yanukovych. This is one of a number of criminal cases which the new government of Ukraine brought against the former head of state after the coup in 2014. In the case of treason, the Prosecutor’s office was going to demand in court for Yanukovych life imprisonment, but later the prosecution asked to appoint Yanukovych sentence of 15 years imprisonment. The ex-President categorically denies any wrongdoing.

Previously the presiding judge of Vladislav Devyatko declared that November 19 will give Yanukovych a final opportunity to appear in court with the last word. According to him, even if the former President refuses speech, the court retired to the jury room for the verdict in the case.
