Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked the US for voting against the UN resolution condemning the occupation of the Golan heights and reiterated that they will remain forever in the hands of the Jewish state.

The Americans on Friday for the first time did not abstain in the discussion document, regularly updated by the fourth Committee of the General Assembly, and supported Israel.

«On Thursday, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, informed me of the decision of the United States to vote against the traditional resolution condemning us presence on the Golan. And this, indeed, happened,» said Netanyahu at Sunday’s Cabinet meeting.

«I would like to thank the President (of the USA Donald) trump and Ambassador (to the UN Nicky) Haley for this important and fair ballot, which is fully correlated with my policy, Israel will forever remain in the Golan heights, the Golan will remain forever in our hands,» he added.

In the six day war of 1967 Israel captured from Syria and occupied the Golan heights, and in 1981 unilaterally annexed them. Affiliation the mountain plateau is considered the main subject of the Israeli-Syrian conflict, attempts to resolve which was done before the start of the civil war in Syria.

The document, against which voted in the United States, calls Israel an occupying power, requires him to cancel the decision on the establishment in the Golan of its «laws, jurisdiction and administration».
