Serious problems in the American army, which the United States would risk to fail in the event of war with Russia or China, associated with lack of manpower and resources, writes the National Interest.

The publication notes that «a serious crisis» in the national defense of the United States is associated primarily with the fact that to counter the so-called «five major hazards» — Russia, China, Iran, North Korea and international terrorism — Washington needs a large number of troops, which at the moment is at the lowest level ever since the end of world war II.

The magazine recalls that a number of experts in and outside government have repeatedly pointed out this problem. So, the US Navy says that to fulfill a national defense strategy they need 355 warships — at the moment there are 286. Air force in need of 386 squadrons, but now have 312. The army, in turn, believe that they need 500 thousand soldiers against the current of 476 thousand.

The publication stresses that the number of troops and their combat readiness and modernization had a negative impact budget cuts on defense. Act for control over the budget approved in 2011, has resulted in a reduction of spending on the Pentagon on 539 billion dollars. The Minister of defence James Mattis pointed to this problem and said that to convert the armed forces to the desired level necessary annual increase in defence spending by three to five percent. However, costs only decreased, even before the announcement of Donald trump about reducing the Pentagon’s budget in fiscal year 2020 by 4.5 percent.

In addition, there is a lack of American troops in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region, as well as the lack of strategy to counter Russia and China.

Earlier in the USA has prepared a report of the special Commission on national defence strategy, established at the direction of the U.S. Congress. The document said about reducing the military superiority of the United States to dangerous levels, at which the country risks to fail with high losses in the event of a conflict with Russia or China.
