Obolonskiy district court of Kiev granted the ex-President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych another chance to speak with the last word on the hearing of the case of treason and postponed its consideration on December 5.

The court previously had given Yanukovych the opportunity to testify in court and speak with the last word, but the former President said that because of fears for his life can not come to Kiev. His defence insists that the Kiev court made a request to the Russian Federation in the framework of international legal assistance for the organization of the video speech of former President of Russia. However, Yanukovych had previously been hospitalized, therefore, according to his lawyer, will not be able to speak with the last word.

«To ensure the right to the protection of Viktor Yanukovych, the court announces a break in the hearing until 9.00 am (10.00 GMT. —Approx. ed.), the fifth of December,» said the presiding judge Vladislav Devyatko, stream lead Ukrainian TV channels.

The court allowed the President to refer the last words sitting or lying from a hospital bed, and «is not considered disrespectful».

Private lawyer of ex-President Alexander Gorodinsky asked the court to suspend the meeting in order to Yanukovych was able to appear in court with the last word. According to him, previously the ex-President required two to three weeks of treatment.

In addition, the defender petitioned for the questioning of the former head of Ministry of energy of Ukraine Eduard Stavitsky, who, according to Horoshevskogo may tell the court information about the falsification of the General Prosecutor of Ukraine case against Yanukovych. Gorodinski asked the court to request international legal assistance in Israel, where the witness resides, and to organize the interview. The court refused to allow the lawyer on the petition noting that the stage of examination of witnesses is over the court to return to it only after the last word of the accused, if they are stated not known to the court new facts.

The presiding judge had previously stated that regardless of whether the act Yanukovych last word on Monday, the panel of judges retired to the jury room for the verdict.

The court in late June of 2017 began its consideration of the merits of treason against Yanukovych. This is one of a number of criminal cases which the new government of Ukraine brought against the former head of state after the coup in 2014. In the case of treason, the Prosecutor’s office was going to demand in court for Yanukovych life imprisonment, but later the prosecution asked to appoint Yanukovych sentence of 15 years imprisonment. The ex-President categorically denies any wrongdoing.
