In Istanbul November 27, opens the Synod of the Church of Constantinople, he will be held until November 29. The main issue at the Synod will be the relationship of Church and state in Greece, part of which is under the canonical jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

However, the Synod intends to discuss the question of granting autocephaly to Ukraine. In Istanbul will arrive on 28 November Advisor of the President of Ukraine Rostyslav Pavlenko, to participate in the meeting of the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. He will also take part in the final editing or approval of the text of the Tomos.

None of the local churches did not support the actions of Constantinople, theologians accuse Patriarch Bartholomew to the papacy and indicate that the only canonical way of the autocephaly is on the pan-Orthodox Council. However, the lack of support Bartholomew can go on the granting of autocephaly not the Church, but Ukraine, that is actually the President of Petro Poroshenko.

Ukraine

While not completely clear that the whole agenda of discussion at the Synod of the granting of autocephaly to Ukraine, told RIA Novosti source in Church circles close to Fanaru.

On the eve of the Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople stated that it «reiterates its sacred the decision on granting of the Tomos of autocephaly of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.»

«While the process of preparation of the Holy Council of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, a specific date in December 2018 will be presented for confirmation and announcement by the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate,» said Fanar, the residence of the Patriarch.

While in Ukraine failed to agree even on the date of the «unification Council», who want to experience the local non-canonical Church and the Kiev authorities. Moreover, the actions of Bartholomew wasn’t supported by any of the local churches, and most said he does illegal things, said the Agency interlocutor.

According to him, none of the churches did not recognize Raskolnikov Filaret – the so-called «Patriarch of the Kiev Patriarchate» and Makarios, Primate of the non-canonical Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church.

«Now in the Constantinople Patriarchate is no question about the granting of the autocephaly of Fanar said that «we will give the autocephaly to Ukraine.» So they are trying to close the issue», — said the source.

He considers it a mistake.

«The right to grant autocephaly belongs solely to the Patriarch, it ended long ago, in the V century. It has only a pan-Orthodox Council. This is democracy in the Church. At the moment that should do the Patriarchate is in accordance with the sacred canons to convene a pan-Orthodox Council and there to discuss everything. But he can’t convene the Council because he sees the Cathedral will not support decisions of Bartholomew. Now he wants to close the topic, but make it very cleverly designed to give autocephaly to Ukraine and let her decide how to use this autocephaly or not,» — said the source.

According to him, the choice remains to be done in December. «Or will put the issue of autocephaly for the Orthodox Church or the Patriarch makes a mistake he will give Tomos Ukraine, that is only (President Petro) Poroshenko is a thing that is not allowed. This has never happened before in history. The Church never gets involved in politics, although she recognizes the political leaders whom the people elect, from the time of emperors to today. If it will happen, it will not only be illegal, but a heresy,» — concluded the Agency interlocutor.

Bartholomew himself three days before the Synod recognized that the procedure of granting autocephaly to the end not resolved because it was not possible to discuss the Orthodox Cathedral on the island of Crete in 2016 due to the lack of the presence of many local Orthodox churches, including Russian, but he intends to bring to an end the provision of Tomos Ukraine. At the meeting on Saturday in Bucharest with the hierarchs of the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Patriarch reiterated plans «to provide in the near future, the status of autocephaly of the Church, victims split for many years» and reiterated that he has the right to grant the Tomos of autocephaly «Kiev, the ancient Church of the region of Constantinople».

The Patriarchate of Constantinople the session of the Synod 9 — 11 October announced that it is embarking on the process of granting autocephaly churches in Ukraine. He overturned the decision of 1686 on the transition of the Kyiv Metropolitanate to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate and declared the restoration of stavropigio in Kiev (status submission directly to the Patriarch of Constantinople). In response to these actions by the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church on 15 October adopted a decision on the impossibility of further Eucharistic communion (joint service liturgies) with Constantinople.

The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church has called canonically void, and saw politics in the abolition of Constantinople by the act of 1686 on the transfer of the Kyiv Metropolitanate to the jurisdiction of the Moscow Patriarchate. The head of the Department for external Church relations of the Moscow Patriarchate Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk said that Constantinople lost its right to be called the coordinating centre of Orthodoxy.

In the Russian Orthodox Church hope that Constantinople will change the decision to give the autocephaly of the Ukrainian Church, and before that he will be in schism.

The Greek question

Participation in the meeting of the Synod will the Minister of education and religious Affairs of Greece Costas Gavroglu, he will inform the bishops about the plans of the Greek government on the separation of Church and state. This is the second trip Gavroglu two weeks in Fanar. Tenth of November he was received at the Phanar Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who had not been informed about the plans of the authorities of Greece about the agreement of the Greek Church.

The Minister during the two-hour meeting was informed by Bartholomew about the situation. «I heard fear, I will give them,» said Gavroglu reporters after the meeting.

The question of how the agreement will affect the metropolitanates of the «new lands», Crete and the Dodecanese Islands, the Minister said that these issues will be discussed.

The so-called «new lands» (Crete, the Dodecanese Islands, and Northern Greece with Thessaloniki) is a province of the Ottoman Empire, annexed to Greece by the end of the Balkan wars of 1912 — are under the canonical jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, but also participate in the work of the Greek Orthodox Church, here the Church is, in fact, dual power.

The Greek clergy opposed to the change of the order of payment of their salaries, which they now receive from the state on a par with civil servants. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the head of the Greek Orthodox Church Archbishop Jerome on 6 November, discussed reform and signed a joint statement, which specifies the terms of the separation of Church and state in the framework of the constitutional reform. Many of the hierarchs of the Greek Church opposed changes in the status of priests. Bartholomew the statement was not informed.
