Germany and France oppose the tightening of existing sanctions against Russia on the background of the incident in the Kerch Strait, reported in Wednesday’s edition of the Welt, citing diplomatic sources in the European Union.

As reports the edition, on Tuesday at a secret meeting of the Committee on politics and security in Brussels, diplomats from both countries said that now it is important to take «measures to build confidence». According to sources in the EU, the sanctions don’t apply to them.

Instead, according to the newspaper, the governments of Germany and France want «to continue their diplomatic efforts» in considering the role of the Organization for security and cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which it can play to resolve the situation in the Kerch Strait.

On Sunday, three ships of naval forces of Ukraine «Berdyansk», «Nikopol» and «Yana Kapu» — violated the state border of Russia, included in the temporarily closed waters of the territorial sea of the Russian Federation and moved from the Black sea to Kerch Strait. They maneuvered in a dangerous manner, did not obey the lawful demands of the Russian authorities.
