At auction in the USA sold particles of lunar soil

Particles of lunar soil brought to Earth by the Soviet automatic station «Luna-16» in 1970, sold at auction auction house Sotheby’s in new York city over 855 thousand dollars, according to the website of the auction house.

According to him, the assessment of the lot was from 700 thousand to 1 million dollars.

Gone under the hammer fragments of lunar soil enclosed in a metal box with the inscription in Russian «the soil Particles of the moon-16». On the box there is a magnifying glass to better see under the glass particles of lunar soil.

These samples were exposed for sale by their owner, who purchased them at auction at Sotheby’s in 1993. As noted by the auction house, these particles of lunar soil are the only officially passed into the possession of a private person.

Gone with the bidding fragments of lunar soil formerly belonged to Nina Queen, the wife of the head of the Soviet space program Sergey Korolev. The government of the USSR handed the samples to the wife the Queen in recognition of the famous academician.

These lots are assessed by the organizers of trading in the 30-40 thousand dollars and 5-8 thousand dollars, respectively.

With bidding already left such items as the book «Road to space» autographed by its author, Yuri Gagarin, space chess game designed for playing in zero gravity, and several themed paintings by artist Andrei Sokolov.
