The President of Russia Vladimir Putin took part in the meeting of the heads of state of BRICS, which took place on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Argentina.

In his speech, the Russian leader touched upon the topic of sanctions, the situation in Syria, the U.S. withdrawal from the INF Treaty.

Sanctions undermine the world economy

Putin criticized the practice of unilateral sanctions, stressing that they adversely affect international cooperation.

«It is impossible not to see that unfair competition is increasingly a substitute for honest, equitable inter-state dialogue. Extends the vicious practice of illegal unilateral sanctions protectionist measures in circumvention of the UN Charter and WTO rules and other universally recognized norms of law,» — said the Russian leader.

All this, he continued, «leads to a curtailment of business relations, loss of trust between the participants of economic relations, ripping the very fabric of the world economy».

The Russian leader urged the BRICS countries to influence the establishment of a fair system of international relations and collectively to solve the acute problems facing the global community.

«For long-term stabilization of the situation in Syria, it is important to promote a real process of political settlement. For these purposes, Russia is working closely with partners in the framework of the Astana format: with Iran and Turkey,» — said the Russian leader.

Putin also stressed that among the priorities that must be addressed in a middle Eastern country, economic recovery and infrastructure creating conditions for the return of refugees. He called on the BRICS partners to connect to humanitarian assistance programmes.

The Russian leader also warned against flirting with terrorists and their use for achieving different geopolitical goals. He stressed that in relation to these groups unacceptable double standards and «any compromise».

To stabilize WTO

Putin urged to solve trade disputes in the WTO through dialogue with the participation of all stakeholders.

Moscow, he thinks, will make every effort to stabilize the organization and its further development.

The Russian leader said that the BRICS have every reason to seek to strengthen its influence in the International monetary Fund.

According to him, significant contribution to ensuring financial stability introduces a New BRICS development Bank, which has already funded 26 projects in the countries of the Association in the amount of $ 6.5 billion.

«The possible failure of the US obligations under the INF Treaty, the uncertainty in position on the issue of the Treaty on strategic offensive arms create risks of an uncontrolled arms race,» — said Putin.

He stressed that Russia proceeds from the fact that the BRICS countries on this subject will be to come up with a single agreed position that mobilizes the efforts of the international community in the interests of international security and stability.

The President urged to do everything possible to maintain a Joint comprehensive plan of action (SVPD) and to prevent a new spiral of tension around the Iranian nuclear program.
