After the failure of the hierarchs of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church to participate in the «unification Council» the authorities have begun «individual work» with them to persuade them to change their decision, said on Friday, RIA Novosti the head of the Synodal Department of the Moscow Patriarchate on relations of the Church with society and mass-media Vladimir Legoyda, commenting on the searches in the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.

«It looks exactly like a pressure, another explanation I have. And Bishop Paul (the vicar – ed.) said that he receives threatening phone calls, and, of course, difficult to be regarded only as pressure. And here the clear causal link, as stated, that will take place — however, there is still no date of the so-called unification Council,» — said Legoyda.

He explained that the alleged Ukrainian authorities and the Patriarchate of Constantinople an event is impossible without the participation of the canonical Church, but the bishops of the UOC clearly stated that it was not going to participate in it.

«In General, after they said it, not when it was initiated by the President of Ukraine a meeting with the bishops because he came to Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, where was ready to meet him — that began just is what is called individual work. As we remember, the Metropolitan Luke of Zaporozhye talked about how he was invited to SBU and him had a conversation. With other priests and bishops had something like that. And here on the Lord of Paul, as Governor of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, so the pressure is on,» — said Legoyda.

He acknowledged that while it is possible to speak only about «growing pressure».

«Apparently, in the process, which the Ukrainian government and the Patriarchate of Constantinople counted on quick and complete triumph, there were some obvious discrepancies, and now they are here so — perhaps desperate — methods to resolve the situation. While trying to keep a good face on a bad game, because, of course, yesterday’s joyfully optimistic the President of Ukraine a poor fit with what is really going on», — concluded the Agency interlocutor.

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko Thursday on television announced the adoption by the Synod of the Patriarchate of Constantinople «historic decisions» in regard to the Church in Ukraine. In particular, according to him, approved the text of the Tomos of assigning the independence of the Ukrainian Church, and also decided to convene a United Orthodox Cathedral. At the same time, the official communiqué of the Patriarchate of Constantinople at the end of the Synod said nothing about the date of the appointment of the Cathedral, as well as approval of Tomos, it was only about the preparation of the articles of Association («constitutional Charter») of the Church.
