Mariupolski Archbishop, Exarch of the Patriarch of Constantinople, John will continue to lead the Western European Exarchate of Russian parishes, on the dissolution of which was reported earlier, the Synod of the Church of Constantinople, said in a statement the Council of the Archdiocese.

Earlier, the Synod of the Church of Constantinople decided to dissolve the Western European Exarchate of Russian parishes. The decision is annulled by the Patriarchal Tomos of 1999.

«Many years of debate within the Archdiocese and negotiations with the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate was completed by the bestowal of the Patriarchal and Synodal Tomos of 19 June 1999. It was given at the request of the Archdiocese and gave it the status of an Exarchate (not temporary). This status, without any prior consultation with whatever was the official organ of the Archdiocese, was withdrawn by the Synod 27 Nov 2018», — reads the statement of the Council of the Archdiocese.

In addition, it is reported that the «unexpected character» solution is a «serious concern,» but «it is very important not to jump to hasty a response.»

«It should be noted that, in the canonical aspect — Archbishop John as the ruling Bishop didn’t ask to abolish the status of the Exarchate, nor about their own retirement. So, he reserves the fullness of the pastoral responsibility of the Orthodox Russian churches in Western Europe», — said in a statement.

Archbishop John invites the clergy of the Archdiocese to a meeting on December 15. The meeting will be announced on the convening of the General Assembly of the Archdiocese.
