The Chairman of the German-Russian forum Matthias Platzeck in an interview with the Märkische Oderzeitung called to build in Europe a new security architecture in cooperation with Russia.

In his opinion, the current international situation requires a «restart» of relations with Russia and its direct participation in the European security system. He also hopes to soon hold a new Conference on security and cooperation in Europe.

«For a long time we are not talking about whether the Russians form their society in the way we believe is right. We are not talking about partnership and friendship, or similar things. It is all about peaceful coexistence, about the question whether we will be able to live peacefully next to each other on the continent. Unfortunately, we fell back to this level. We simply face the end, as some say, the era of liberalism,» said Platzeck.

The politician criticized the Charter of Paris, signed in 1991, calling it «book of fairytales», which does not reflect modern realities. This document was intended program of international cooperation shows the commitment of the participating countries towards democracy based on respect for human rights and ensuring universal prosperity while guaranteeing economic freedom and social justice.

Platzeck also touched on the dangerous situation which developed in Ukraine after the incident in the Kerch Strait. He believes that this issue cannot be analysed in isolation from the upcoming presidential elections in the country. Following the incident, the imposition of martial law is already a sign that Poroshenko began to implement his campaign plan.

While Platzeck questioned the responsibility of Russia for this situation, finding no motive for Russia to be a provocation. «It stands to reason that for Putin, it didn’t end very well. In the past weeks, all the preparations of the Russian side were focused on the planned meeting with trump. And in his Twitter Poroshenko openly glad that she escaped,» — said the politician.

He also believes that in this situation Germany needs to encourage both sides to show restraint and reduce tensions. «I hope that in the next 3-4 months before the presidential elections in Ukraine will not happen even more large-scale conflicts. So we may have been able to take a step back and start restart», — said Platzeck, adding that all the circumstances of the incident are still not clear.
