In Russian language was published autobiographical novel Mima Berg «fashion House», telling about the most popular Soviet fashion magazine «Silhouette» in which the author worked for 15 years. In an interview with RIA Novosti Estonian writer remembers, as requested by the editor of the women of the Soviet Union and how the designers tried to avoid ideological errors.

All-Union beauty

I wrote articles about fashion, historical texts. Often worked in libraries, gathering material. Wrote about current trends. In the late 1980s we began to travel to the countries of people’s democracy. For example, in the GDR spoke with the designers of their Houses, even made friends. Came to us from the GDR, Czechoslovakia. We did a special «exchange» rooms «Silhouette» — they wrote about fashion in the Soviet Union, and we wrote about them.

Another of my duty was to answer letters from readers. Many complained about the problems as we today would say with the extra weight. The first time I tried to answer each letter personally, trying to put yourself in the place of the addressee and imagine how I would feel. But emails became too much, and I made a template and sent.

Basically, we removed models from our fashion House. And sometimes our employees have found beautiful girls on the street and offered a photo shoot. It was very prestigious.

About Western fashion

«Silhouette» has become an incredibly popular magazine, I think, due to the proximity of the West. We have available the latest issue of fashion magazines is primarily Finnish and Swedish. But there were Vogue. Often, these logs fell to the Republic in private: people living abroad send to relatives. And then they donated second-hand shops had such magazines and catalogs is expensive, so selling them was profitable. We immediately have redeemed them — we had an arrangement with shops.

The fabric was also not easy to get. Once our artists go to Uzbekistan — there is in fact a very beautiful, bright national fabric — and came up with beautiful and elegant contemporary models of fabrics with these patterns. Now these figures in fashion, but then it was exotic.

When something concrete was in Vogue, the reader wrote to us with requests to make patterns. How did they know about these updates. For example, began to wear caps. We made patterns, and these caps have dressed up the whole Tallinn.

If there were no interesting emails, we their own up. At some point in Vogue Icelandic sweaters with ornaments. One of our employee have made a few pieces. We wanted to show them in the magazine because they turned out beautiful and it was popular. And we came up with a letter that supposedly someone asked how to do.© RIA to Novoshepelychi in photobacteria Soviet fashion at the international fair in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv. 1962«Nude photos sent from around the country.» How did a fashion magazine in the Soviet Union© RIA to Novoshepelychi in photobacteria Soviet fashion at the international fair in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv. 1962

On the influence of ideology

I think it was the free magazine in Estonia, nobody really controlled our work. Sometimes, however, we were reprimanded for any «ideologically incorrect» model. On the same pattern as the decoration the artist has depicted a Maltese cross, was trouble. The chief editor was summoned to the Central Committee of the party.

Or one designer made decoration in the form of a glass eye. We set the model and photographed her with this pendant, attaching it to his face, where a person’s eyes. As Chairman of the Presidium of the Estonian SSR in that period was with the glass eye! So the leadership at that time also got.
