Members of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg sent a letter to acting Governor Alexander Beglov with a request to cancel the order of the city authorities, including the possibility of St. Isaac’s Cathedral in gratuitous using of Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), said on Monday, the lawmaker Maxim Reznik.

The situation around St. Isaac’s Cathedral caused a public outcry when about two years ago the authorities of St. Petersburg decided to transfer the Cathedral for 49 years, the Russian Orthodox Church in the free use with preserving the Museum and educational functions. Later they said that the Cathedral is transmitted without a change of legal status — its owner is the city. The public remains concerned about the fate of Isaac, despite the statement of representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Museum functions will be expanded, and the entrance to the Cathedral will be free.

«Ten deputies of Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg appealed to acting Governor Alexander Beglov with the proposal to cancel the pending order on transfer of the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Isaac’s Cathedral,» wrote Resnik on the page in Facebook by posting a copy of this letter.

MPs insist on the invalidation of orders of the municipal Committee of property relations (KIO) of 30 December 2016, including the plan of actions on preparation for the transfer of St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the Russian Orthodox Church. The first paragraph of the document requires to determine the possibility of removing Isaac from the operational management of the state Museum-monument «St. Isaac’s Cathedral», the second paragraph of the Directive relates to information about the composition of Museum collections in the Cathedral.

«The Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Mikhail Mokretsov — Chairman of the KIO… (letter of October 29, 2018) indicated that implementation of paragraphs 1 and 2 of the action plan, approved by the decree has lost its relevance. We ask you to recognize the order invalid,» the statement reads.

A review of the government of St. Petersburg RIA Novosti has not yet.
