Pope Francis took on Monday in the Vatican the leader of the Palestinian national authority (PNA) Mahmoud Abbas and discussed with him the situation in the middle East, paying special attention to the status of Jerusalem, reported the press service of the Holy see.

As have informed RIA of news in the Vatican press service, the head of the Palestinian authority also met with the foreign Minister of the Holy see, Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher.

During the negotiations the parties «were stopped on the course of reconciliation inside the Palestinian people, as well as on efforts to resume the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians and achieving a two-state solution».

«Special attention was paid to the status of Jerusalem. They stressed the importance of recognizing and preserving the identity and the universal values of the Holy city for the three Abrahamic religions,» said the Vatican press office.

In addition, questions were raised related to the ongoing conflicts in the middle East. It was pointed out to the urgent need to facilitate the continuation of the peace process and dialogue in the region with the participation of religious common «in order to combat all forms of extremism and fundamentalism».

During the talks, the sides also noted the good level of bilateral relations between the Holy see and Palestine, as well as the positive role that Christians and the Church play in Palestinian society in accordance with the full agreement of the relationship between the two countries is signed in 2015.

In December 2017, the President of the United States Donald trump announced the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and signed a document about the transfer of the us Embassy there from tel Aviv. The decision of the us leader was welcomed in Israel, but caused a negative reaction from many countries, primarily countries in the Middle East.

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on non-recognition of decisions of the United States on the status of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, voted for the document 128 countries, opposed by nine, abstentions 35. According to the resolution, «any decisions and actions that suggest a change of character, status and demographic composition of the Holy city of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are invalid and must be canceled.»

In June 2015, the Vatican signed a historic full-blown relationship agreement between the Holy see and Palestine, which dealt with the main aspects of the life and work of the Catholic Church in the state of Palestine.

Official relations between the Holy see and the Palestine liberation Organization (PLO) was established in October 1994. Shortly after this was established by permanent bilateral Commission, which began work on the text of a bilateral Treaty. In February 2000, the agreement, called the «Basic agreement» was signed. At the same time the parties agreed to continue the work of the Commission in the future to sign a comprehensive bilateral Treaty relationship. In fact, however, this work was initiated only in 2010, after a pilgrimage of Pope Benedict XVI to the Holy land. In may 2015, the parties announced that a bilateral Commission had completed its work and an agreed text was submitted to the authorities of both countries.
