Ukraine will become the only country in Europe whose borders are not recognized by the neighbor, if he would not renew a friendship Treaty with Russia, former Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov.

The Treaty on friendship, cooperation and partnership between Russia and Ukraine is the basic document of Russian-Ukrainian relations, which involves strategic partnership between the two countries «on the basis of principles of mutual respect, sovereign equality, territorial integrity, inviolability of borders, peaceful settlement of disputes, non-use of force or threat by force, including economic and other means of pressure». President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko on Monday submitted to the Parliament a draft law on the termination of this agreement.

«If to denounce the agreement, Ukraine will become the only country in Europe whose borders are not recognized by the neighbor. And they are 2 thousand kilometers,» — said Azarov at a press conference in Moscow.

In addition, he recalled that this Treaty are many other bilateral agreements. «All these issues will again become open. Who will benefit from this? Of course, the Ukrainian people will not benefit from this», — considers ex-the Prime Minister of Ukraine, adding that the current Treaty of friendship was prepared five years, «and its preparation was not simple.»

Azarov was the Prime Minister of Ukraine in 2010-2014.

In September Poroshenko enacted the decision of the Council of national security and defense of termination of the Treaty of friendship, cooperation and partnership between Ukraine and Russia. As explained by the Ukrainian authorities, it is not about denunciation of the Treaty, and the decision not to renew. In case of observance of all procedures the contract will cease with effect from 1 April 2019.

Moscow called Kiev’s refusal from the contract was renewed destructive step and expressed deep regret in connection with this decision of the Ukrainian leadership. Against the initiative not to renew the contract was made by the Ukrainian opposition, saying that such a decision is contrary to the national interests of the country and would set a dangerous legal vacuum and complicate relations with Russia.

The Treaty of friendship, cooperation and partnership between Ukraine and Russia was signed in Kiev on 31 may 1997. It entered into force on 1 April 1999 for a period of 10 years with automatic renewal for the next ten-year periods in the absence of objections of the parties.
