The parents of the virgin Mary, righteous Joachim and Anna, to old age were childless, and in praying for the birth of a child, made a vow, that if she had a child, she would dedicate him to God. When Mary was three years old, his parents accompanied by relatives and friends took her to the temple in Jerusalem, where she had to spend time to adulthood in prayer and labours for the Lord. According to legend, the young Mary herself, without any outside help, overcame a 15 large stone steps leading to the temple than impressed all those present. Through inspiration from above, the high priest, which at that time was Zacharias, father of John the Baptist, introduced the blessed virgin in the Holy of holies, where he had a right to come once a year, only he himself with a purification sacrifice.

Mary stayed in the temple of Jerusalem until, until she was 12 years old. She then decided to dedicate himself to God, was entrusted to the care of Joseph the betrothed.

The tradition of celebrating Orthodox Church of the presentation in the temple of the Mother of God began in the first centuries of Christianity.
