St. Petersburg asked to keep the Museum activities in the chancel of St. Isaac’s Cathedral

Committee for culture of St. Petersburg via e-foster has received about 150 complaints of citizens concerned about the expansion of the area of worship at St. Isaac’s Cathedral, told RIA Novosti on Tuesday the press-Secretary of the Committee Daniil Filatov.

Earlier it was reported that on 7 December, the Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga Varsonofy plans to consecrate for regular worship in the chapel of St. Catherine in St. Isaac’s Cathedral. Currently, regular services are held in the chapel of Alexander Nevsky.

«On 28 October in the Committee on culture of St.-Petersburg has received about 150 appeals from citizens who expressed concern about the expansion of the area of worship at St. Isaac’s Cathedral. Treatment written by one sample and directed through an electronic reception. The authors of the letters are asked to save the Museum’s activities in the chapel of St. Catherine,» — said Filatov.

According to him, currently the Committee is preparing responses given the position of leadership of the State Museum-monument «St. Isaac’s Cathedral».

The situation around St. Isaac’s Cathedral caused a public outcry when the authorities of St. Petersburg decided to transfer the Cathedral for 49 years, the Russian Orthodox Church in the free use with preserving the Museum and educational functions. Later they said that the Cathedral is transmitted without a change of legal status — its owner is the city. The public is concerned about the fate of Isaac, despite the statement of representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Museum functions will be expanded, and the entrance to the Cathedral will be free.
