The actions of Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople for the creation of an Autocephalous Church in Ukraine — it is «revenge» the Russian Patriarch Kirill for the failure of the Cretan Cathedral in 2016 and paid at the same time the political order of the United States, said the head of the Department for external Church relations of the Moscow Patriarchate Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, the French-speaking portal Orthodoxie.com.

«The actions of Patriarch Bartholomew already cut to pieces the body of the Orthodox Church. And he does it consciously. Patriarch Bartholomew was alerted to the fact that there will be consequences, but he continues his line, fulfilling a political order that came to him from the United States of America. The leadership of this country does not hide the fact that they are the main customers. The order was paid for banknotes, which is also quite well known,» — said Metropolitan Hilarion in his interview, the full text of which was published on Wednesday in the DECR website.

According to him, the purpose of this order – «the destruction of the unity of the Orthodox Church», and, «above all, Patriarch Bartholomew wants to destroy Russian Orthodox Church, to weaken her.»

«Thus he wants revenge on Patriarch Kirill for the failure of the Cretan Cathedral, as he believes that he allegedly «persuaded» those Orthodox churches who have refused to participate in the Cathedral. But, remember, the first refusal from participation said the Bulgarian Church, then Antioch, then Georgian, each of them decided independently of one another, and all of these churches had their own reasons for this decision,» said Bishop.

He reminded that the Moscow Patriarchate was the last one who refused to participate in the Cretan Cathedral, and this decision was motivated solely by the fact that, as emphasized in the Russian Church throughout the pre-Council process, decisions on pan-Orthodox Council should be taken by consensus, which implies the participation of all the recognized Autocephalous churches.

«If one Church is not involved, so there was no consensus. When the three churches has announced that it will not come on Cretan Cathedral — besides, the Serbian Church stated the need for the transfer time of the meeting, but later changed his decision, we were forced to refuse. Someone suggested to Patriarch Bartholomew that it was all organized by Patriarch Kirill, and he decided to take revenge in this way», — said the head of the Department for external Church relations.

The Metropolitan added that «humanly speaking, this is very dishonest», and «Christian is just outrageous.» «I’m sorry about the spiritual fall of that hierarchy, which was the cause of its confluence with the schism,» said he.

Assessing the impact of the Cretan Cathedral, Metropolitan Hilarion has called it a failure: «the discussion of these documents and their implementation in local Orthodox churches does not happen.»

The Cathedral of Crete took place in 2016 under the chairmanship of Patriarch Bartholomew. The participants adopted six papers and delivered a message about their attitude to main events and problems of the modern world. In the Cathedral was attended by the heads 10 of the 14 local churches. Not arrived on Crete, Russian, Antiochian, Bulgarian and Georgian churches did not agree with the rules and procedure for the preparation of the Council and the texts of a number of adopted documents. The Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church recognized the Council of the Orthodox churches on Crete is an important event, noting that it could not be regarded as pan-Orthodox, and its documents «as expressing a pan-Orthodox consensus.»
